Injuries are common from skating sports. These include abrasions, contusions, ligamentous sprains, and fractures. Most are confined to the upper extremity. The probability of injury, in consort with a local recreational park, have resulted in the frequent presentation of patients for treatment to the emergency department at The Hamot Medical Center, a northwestern Pennsylvania regional teaching hospital. Given its personal and financial toll, orthopaedic attendings and surgical residents alike have expressed an interest in injury prevention via a better understanding of the biomechanical underpinnings of these injuries.
